The next big thing in manicures is already here, and manicurists are loving the union of nail art and nail care. A super-slick, ultra-glossy long-lasting manicure designed to make nail stronger, the bio sculpture manicure is quickly gaining traction. So what it is that makes this type of manicure so unique? Ahead, we break down everything you need to know about this new manicure.

What Is a Bio Sculpture Manicure?

“Bio sculpture is a prescriptive gel service designed to improve nail health,” says London-based luxury manicurist Leah Parr. “It is both a bottle and pot/brush system. It is a prescriptive gel system, meaning it is tailored to your specific nail type and concern. “While this system is advertised as lasting three plus weeks, Parr says it’s very common for these manicures to long out-live that expectation. “Most of my clients’ [manicures] last four weeks,” Parr says. “I’ve even had someone come in after eight weeks with them all still on.”

For Parr, there’s a lot to love about the system. “I absolutely love using bio sculpture,” Parr says. “[Its] range of bases to suit different nail types are so unique, ensuring I get a long-lasting manicure every time. Its color range is also astonishing; there are so many! I also find it much thinner in comparison to other systems, giving a much more clean and natural finish without compromising on strength and durability.”

How Does Bio Sculpture Compare to a Gel Manicure?

Gel manicures are UV-cured and, despite their longevity, may cause nail damage. “Gel manicures have become a staple in the beauty industry due to their durability and retention,” explains V Beauty Pure educator Leonora Salama. “They come in various types, each with their own unique application process, durability and effect on the natural nail. Regular gel polish is the most common type, known for its glossy finish and easy removal process.”

There are tons of options when it comes to gel, including regular gel, builder gel, Russian gel and soft gel. According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, gel manicures can lead to nail brittleness, peeling and cracking, while UV curing can lead to an increased risk of hand aging and skin cancer.

While bio sculpture manicures can still be done with UV curing, the majority of these sculpting products will also cure under a florescent light. Bio sculpture also promises to provide serious nail care and prevent issues like peeling and cracking, which can occur with gel manicures.

Who Is Bio Sculpture Good For?

If you want the luxury experience of a good manicure without sacrificing your nail health, bio sculpture might be right for you. Particularly useful for anyone who experiences nail peeling or cracking after a gel or acrylic manicure, this formula is designed to strengthen nails and promote growth.

How Much Will a Bio Sculpture Manicure Cost?

Gel manicures vary in price based on your location, but typically cost $10-15 more than a traditional manicure. A bio sculpture manicure is typically more expensive than a gel manicure, with pricing usually starting around $65, according to Parr.

“This is a premium product so it costs more than the average gel manicure due to the high quality ingredients used,” Parr adds. “You also have to be trained with the system to buy the products, which I think is amazing, so you know you’re getting a great service every time.”
