NWEA Map Scores by Grade Level & Percentiles | Mastery Genius (2024)

The NWEA MAP test is an adaptive assessment for K-12 students that covers math, reading, language usage, and science. It is one of the most trusted and widely-used assessments for primary and secondary educators.

MAP test scores are extremely useful for teachers and educators because they help benchmark how far above or below grade level students are in specific sub-topics. Using these scores, educators can custom-tailor curriculums and lessons to help students master subjects that they may be struggling with.

In this guide, we will help you understand exactly what your child’s NWEA MAP scores mean depending on grade level and time of year (fall, winter, or spring).

Looking to improve your child’s reading & math skills? Mastery Genius can help! Our adaptive software pinpoints exactly where your child is struggling and develops custom lessons to get them beck on track.Learn more here.

How to Interpret MAP Scores Correctly

MAP scores aren’t as simple a getting an A, B, or C – scores need to be interpreted differently depending on grade level, time of year, and subject. Make sure you read the next section carefully.

  • First – click on the grade level for the MAP test that you or your student took. There will be three charts depending on when the test was taken.
  • Next – look for the correct timeframe (fall, winter, or spring). Each timeframe will have its own sub-heading and chart. This is important because scores typically change as the school year progresses.
  • Finally – make sure you’re looking at the correct subject column (math, reading, or language usage).

What do MAP Score Percentiles Mean?

A score in the 50th percentile is considered “average” – meaning it is right in the middle of where students in that specific grade score during that time of the year. A score in the 95th percentile means that is it better than 95% of other children in that grade level during that time of the year.
