Grey’s Anatomy Exec Teases Romance Between New Doctor and [Spoiler]: ‘You Never Know’ (2024)

A new doctor will be spicing things up at Grey Sloan Memorial on the upcoming third episode of Grey’s Anatomy Season 20. Who is Dr. Monica Beltran on Grey’s Anatomy? Keep reading to find out.

Grey’s Anatomy is ABC’s long-running medical drama that focuses on the lives of surgical interns, residents and attendings at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle, Washington. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the show debuted in 2005 and has earned more than 38 Primetime Emmy nominations after almost two decades on the air.

The majority of the Season 19 cast is set to return for Season 20, including Chandra Wilson as Dr. Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr. as Dr. Richard Webber, Kevin McKidd as Dr. Owen Hunt and Caterina Scorsone as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, among others. Additionally,Jessica Capshaw, who exited the series in Season 14, will be reprising her role as Dr. Arizona Robbins for a surprise guest appearance, along with Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey.

As if Arizona and Meredith’s return didn’t shake things up enough, Grey Sloan Memorial will also be getting two new doctors, one of which might spark a romantic connection with Amelia. Below, we have all the details on the latest addition to the Grey’s Anatomy cast.

Who is Dr. Monica Beltran on Grey’s Anatomy? Dr. Monica Beltran is a new pediatric surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial. According to the official synopsis, Monica’s “pragmatism and level-headedness have made her one of the best in her field. Her willingness to push boundaries can be admirable and aggravating, but it’s always aimed at providing top-quality care to her patients.”

Fans got their first look at the new doctor in the official Season 20 trailer, which dropped on Feb. 29, 2024. In it, Monica and Amelia meet for the first time when the neurosurgeon steals the newcomer’s parking spot. Although Monica looked thoroughly annoyed with Amelia, their first proper meeting in the hospital seemed to spark some chemistry. Perhaps they’ll be able to laugh off the parking lot kerfuffle and view it as a playful meet-cute. Amelia is single now following her and Kai Bartley’s (E.R. Fightmaster) breakup in Season 19, so there could be a new romance on the horizon for her. With Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack) now in a relationship with Dr. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), what better way to spice up Amelia’s love life than have her fall for someone new.

Dr. Arizona Robbins is also a peds surgeon, though, so perhaps she and Monica will be the ones to hit it off. Last time viewers saw Arizona she was single, but it’s been several years since she graced our screens and her relationship status might have changed by now.

Ahead of Monica’s debut episode, showrunner Meg Marinis previewed what fans can expect from the new character. “She’s a no-nonsense pediatric surgeon so she’s going to butt heads with our doctors because our doctors are about nonsense, right, if you watched the finale, but it’s going to be really fun,” Marinis told Deadline. “She’s not like any of our doctors, and that’s going to create some conflict and tension at the top. And I think that’s what we saw in the trailer, the beginning of that character butting heads with the doctors.”

As for if Monica will hit it off with Amelia, Marinis teased: “You never know who will be romantic with who. This isGrey’s Anatomy, there’s always going to be some of that.”

Monica will be played by actress Natalie Morales. It’s unclear how many episodes she will appear in or if she will stay on the show past Season 20, but a relationship with Amelia would certainly help her case. Morales is best known for starring as Lucy Santo Domingo on Parks and Rec and as Michelle Gutierrez on Netflix’s Dead to Me. Most recently, she appeared in the 2023 comedy No Hard Feelings alongside Jennifer Lawrence and in Season 3 of Apple TV’s The Morning Show.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 2o premieres on ABC on March 14, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET and streams on Hulu.
